It is no longer right on the edge of the cliff, so that danger is mostly past, but now the descent begins in earnest: the next mile loses 1,000′ over many drops, ledges, and pinches.

From Moab, take HWY 191 north to HWY 279 (Potash Rd.). Take HWY 279 south for about 3-4 miles. Trail can be accessed from one of the pullouts on the road, or at Lion’s Park Campsite.

Portal Overlook Hiking Trail, Moab, Utah

From JayCee Park, follow the hiking trail up the Colorado River towards the river “portal.” Please register at the visitor box. From the visitor box, the trail begins its climb to the viewpoint. After several switchbacks, the trail follows a cairned route up “ramps” of Kayenta sandstone to the overlook.

Mountain Zone News: Biker Killed in Moab

Kevin Kirk, 43, of Conifer, Colorado was killed at four o’clock yesterday when he fell from the Portal Trail, just west of Moab, along the Colorado River. Kirk was riding the highly exposed trail with two friends when the accident occurred. His bike was found 10 feet below the point where he fell.
